BEFORE THE FIRST DAY
In the beginning
This means what exactly?
In the beginning God Created the Heavens and the Earth (NIV)
The first word of the Bible, in Hebrew, is B’reishit (Looks rude but that is translation for you). It really means “In the beginning of” but this would not make grammatical sense in English. In the beginning of God Created Heaven and the Earth.
However, this is how the Hebrew translates. In Jeremiah 26.1 for example it says, in Hebrew, b’reishit mamlechut Yehovakim (In the beginning of the kingdom of Jehoiakim). With acknowledgement to Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki who was at pains to point these things out (a French Rabbi who died in 1105) b’reishit can ONLY mean – In the beginning of.
The second word of Genesis is bara.
The whole phrase reads B’reishit bara Elohim - בראשית ברא אלהים - and bara means He Created.
The reality here is that the beginning of Genesis does not make sense. Not if you look at it as a one-off event in time.
If the written Holy Word is intentional, then it reads: In the beginning of. This means the whole Creation account is about the beginning of Creation only. Repeat: Just the beginning. So ‘Creation’ is still on-going, even after God rested on the seventh day. The Heavens are still being created; hence we see new stars being made etc. New life is always being created here on Earth. As for the Earth, well it seems it is difficult to create another proper Earth even for God, so maybe He is letting the Heavens try to form another one, through natural phenomena perhaps.
This means it may take billions of stars, perhaps billions of galaxies, just to make one other truly Earth-like planet and even then, another series of events, of massive unlikely proportions, are needed on top just so the new world will have the materials to create and sustain life. Such as the right Sun, the right tilt for seasons, a magnetic field, a huge moon for balance, in fact hundreds of special circumstances are required, all in unison. And then, yet another series of events, of even more enormous unlikely proportions are needed in order to facilitate the creation of life that is intelligent; let alone self-aware. These are the thoughts and findings of science by the way.
Maybe only one Earth can be formed per galaxy at best. Maybe only one per Universe.
Science seems to be confronted by the staggering statistical odds that the chance of intelligent self-aware beings springing up anywhere in the Universe, is of a greater numerical number than there are stars in the cosmos.
You may hear the constant mantra that there must be life elsewhere in the Universe because there are so many other stars. Countless stars. The odds are that billions of them must have planets and from these there must be billions of Earth planets. So even if other life on a planet is a billion-to-one, we would still find the Universe teeming with life. But the reality is that for even our own planet to exist as a sphere for life, perfectly placed in an outer wisp of the Milky Way, the odds are huge.
The odds are so great that the numbers dwarf the billion-to-one ratio.
We even have a giant planet in our solar system to capture meteorites (Jupiter) so that the Earth can be spared, safe for life to grow and be sustained (sorry dinosaurs). It is so that if just one aspect of the attributes of Earth were missing, we would not be here. However, we are here. It is a Miracle pure and simple.
Scientifically we can say the Universe had a beginning and that the Universe is still unfolding and this fits perfectly with the Scripture. Moses probably was uncertain of what he was writing at the time. Nevertheless, he noted it all down anyway. Amazing.
So, who can argue with Genesis 1:1?
To those that use the term Big Bang, why not use the term Big Being.
In the beginning God Created the Heavens and the Earth.
THE FIRST DAY
Now the Earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
It makes you realise that a Bronze Aged ignorant man could not possibly have known these things or even record them. But of course we are talking of Moses. A University educated man who could use the written word.
So are there any scientific problems here? No.
The Earth was formless and empty. Science would agree. Science states that there was not even any atmosphere, no oxygen, no water, just a formless molten rock.
The Bible then goes on to say that darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. This is fine too. Science thinks (remember thinks, there is no proof) that the early Earth was bombarded by other smaller forming baby planets that upon crashing into the Earth made the Earth bigger. Other solar debris also crashed into our planet, like meteorites loaded with water. At some point water formed upon the Earth and survived the searing heat. The water would have been very toxic, not like we know of it today. But that's okay, the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters, calming things down, extracting noxious substances through newly chargeable atmospheric formations and cleansing from newly forming absorbing rocks. Science will of course use different names, like Dark Matter or Dark Energy, but they are within the same tracks of thought.
Either way, the dynamism involved here is so inspiring.
And God Said "Let there be light". God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "Day" and the darkness He called "Night". And there was evening and there was morning - the first day.
Anything scientifically wrong here? No.
The Sun had not been formed yet, but with the Earth haphazardly moving around in a dark void. God used elements, like hydrogen and helium perhaps, to collapse the gases into a nebula state that then in turn became optically active. This would have been very simple for God, a Spiritual Essence of Creative Construct. God then made the Earth spin, maybe very slowly who knows, but spin nonetheless, to achieve a lighter side and a shadow side to the planet.
The main difficulty here perhaps, if the word difficulty is the right word to use in the context of God, is in the initial material that God created, which is rarely talked about, a material hidden within the text: "God Created The Heavens". To get a grip of Creation we need to change how we think about light and dark. We generally think that things are dark until a light shines, be it a household light or the Sun shining on the Earth. However, from God, everything is Light. God is Light. God is everything, radiating His Glory in every direction. So when God Created the Heavens, He also created 'Dark'. Before the Universe was Created, everywhere was light. Everywhere was not dark. Everywhere was Everything. Everywhere was not nothing. Nothing comes from nothing. Everywhere comes from Everything. Dark does not create light. Light creates dark. God created dark. Yes, this is a conundrum. It is an enigma that puzzles our brains. Yet to make this out gives a better grip of a Creator God.
THE SECOND DAY
And God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water”. So, God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God called the expanse “Sky”. And there was evening, and there was morning – the second day.
Again, you must marvel at the text. Moses would not have understood what was meant here. The sky yes but water above our heads? He still wrote down the revelation of it though as he knew it was correct, aside from his own thoughts. Any of us, if charged with ‘creating’ how God would make the Earth, would not come up with these ideas. These ideas are unique because these are real facts. The Genesis is not poetry, as has been proved by the most eminent and qualified Jewish Scholars. Genesis is a narrative.
How does day two fit scientifically. No problems at all.
First, we know that water settled on the Earth. We can see it. The issue we have, like Moses, is the idea of an expanse of water up above. The early Earth would have been very different to the Earth of today, science believes the surface was bombarded by mega lightning bolts. But could a planet literally have a huge ring of water around it. Well yes.
We only need to look at Saturn, a planet that has rings. These rings believe it or not are made up almost entirely of water, look it up. Frozen water but water that scientists have discovered is very much like the water we have here. So, an early Earth with rings like Saturn is possible. There was no moon yet either. Totally scientifically plausible.
I have mentioned Saturn as it is the most famous planet with rings. Uranus and Neptune also have rings and these too have a high concentration of frozen water. Out of nine planets (if you include Pluto) a third have rings of frozen water.
Another question of course is that we are talking about events happening within days, whereas science likes to have millions of years. There are two things to say about that. First. As mentioned before, the Earth may have been spinning or turning at a very slow rate, maybe without any kind of tilt either. Secondly, things do happen much faster than the millions of years always desired by science. The 1980 eruption of the volcano Mount St. Helens in America had the effect of creating fresh horizontal lines of sediment hundreds of feet thick. These were formed within hours. If we had not seen the eruption with our own eyes, say it had happened 3,000 years ago, geology would confidently tell us today that the layers are some 300,000 years old, not 3,000. 100 times older than reality.
It is reckoned, within a 1% margin of error, that the Earth took about 10 million years to have some sort of form. If this is 100 times out, rather than the 1% brazenly offered, remember nobody witnessed the Earth being made, save for God, then this would mean the Earth being formed within just 100,000 years. The Bible says 1000 years with God is like a day. So, we are now down to an Earth Creation Day as being just 100 years. 100 years is nothing in cosmological terms.
Modern thinking is concluding that we may only know about 6% of the known behaviours and systems of the cosmos, in other words, 94% of the time we don't have a clue about why the Universe is developing as it is. If this is true, then we could also conclude that we also only know 6% about the start of our solar system.
What is 6% of 100 years, it is just 6 years. If the Earth in the early days was taking a year to turn on its axis, instead of a 24 hours, then we arrive at SIX DAYS for the Creation of the Earth. Look, I don't know, like all of us, I wasn't there, but God was.
God says it took six days and do you know what, it is scientifically possible, if we think outside of the box. We must remember, the age of the Universe itself is always being downgraded. From a possible 20 billion years it was revised to 13.7 billion years with a 59-million-year possibility of error. Then in 2019 the age was revised down to 11.4 billion years, crushing the 59-million-year reasoning. Some say the Universe is 8 billion years old. The oldest stardust discovered is 7 billion years old.
The point is that many estimates are based on calculations that may be wrong in the first place. Different scientists use different methods or different rates for the expansion of the Universe, known as the Hubble Constant. Even here they assume that all galaxies are roughly the same size in order to make assumptions, but this is incorrect. The greatest Scientist of all, God, says that the Universe is not expanding anyway; it is stretching.
THE THIRD DAY
And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear”. And it was so. God called the dry ground “Land”, and the gathered waters He called “Seas”. And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds”. And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning – the third day.
Science is in harmony with God’s Word.
According to geologists, there was originally only one land mass, called Pangaea. The rest of the Earth was covered in seas. This mirrors the first paragraph. It is also interesting to note that from a biblical point of view it never rained on Earth until the Flood. We think, from a secular perspective, it didn’t rain much in the land of Pangaea either, maybe just the once or at best, twice a year. They could easily be wrong of course, just a little bit out and well, no rain. Biblically the early Earth was kept watered by streams and underground water, which all flowed from the central Garden.
As for the second paragraph, apples come from apple seeds, pears from pear seeds etc. And I am pretty sure all evolutionary commentary would put plants before animals. Pretty sure. But I would be wrong. Animal life evolved between 550-620 million years ago (yep, that is a long long time), whereas plant life only appeared by way of some green scum about 550 million years ago. This has led some to say animal life evolved under 550 million years. It is a dilemma because animals need plants to survive. And both need good bacteria to be present. Most of all, plants need carbon dioxide and the early Earth atmosphere was a mix of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. I think God’s Account fits best.
We have pondered that the early Earth may have spun much slower than now. This idea is linked to a time when we are only into the Second Day of Creation and during the Second Day there was no Sun and no Moon. Here on Day Three there is still no Sun or Moon. Without the gravitational pulls of these bodies on the Earth, who knows what the rotation speed was, certainly, it could have been slower. And even a year of darkness and then a year of light might not have been a problem because no animal life was yet present.
On this Third Day the emphasis seems more on vegetation and seed-bearing trees, not the vast variety of flowers and plants we have today, these all grew out from photosynthesis due to the Sun. Nothing can survive without the Sun, the very air would freeze, let alone the water. We must remember though that while nothing can survive without the Sun, everything can survive with God.
Nevertheless, we should pick all this apart a little. Firstly, there are plants that can survive on dead plants or the fungi of dead plants, if indeed the plants died through no light source on the early Earth. We have today parasitic plants called Myco-heterotrophs and this gives us a clue to how vegetation may have survived. Of course, I am not claiming all these ideas as facts, I am putting forward how the Days of Creation can be considered scientifically plausible. The information I am recording for you is from science. Large trees can survive not only for a year but for decades without light, this is due to their considerable sugar stores and slow metabolism. It is all technically tenable to have a slower rotating Earth back during the Creation Period.
Yet I hear you say, water and air would freeze over without the Sun. I know. I have just said it myself. So there had to be an energy source prior to Day Four in order that our current Day Three could be viable. A source not just of light but of heat as well. There are options to be had here for an energy source in the absence of the Sun, yet we must also recall that it was not for too long a period that the Sun was not about, so let us not get too concerned about this.
Nevertheless, within the gap from Day One to the end of Day Three, light would have come from either an illuminated Saturn, the glow of a nearby Nebular or the Radiance of The Holy Spirit due to the proximity of God. And heat may have come from either of these three sources too, or maybe a combination. The planet Saturn is very hot to this day. Also, the inner heat of the Earth’s new early molten core could have helped a lot as a heat source. We used to always assume the Earth's core rotates faster than the rest of the planet. However, scientists have discovered this data to be inaccurate and that the core is moving much slower. There is no science available to dispute that the early nascent core would not have contributed to a warm Earth.
The Earth was not teeming with life in these early times, how could it without the Sun. Yet vegetation is all very possible, even probable. We are led to believe that vegetation can grow on exoplanets out deep into the Universe, far from the boundaries of our solar system, exoplanets that orbit dim stars, maybe even Brown Dwarf Stars.
Therefore I submit that scientifically, there is no reason to dismiss entirely the notion of a vegetation covered ‘Day Three’, if the early atmosphere did not freeze solid.
THE FOURTH DAY
And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the Earth. And it was so. God made two great lights – the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the Earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning – the fourth day.
Out of all the ‘Days of Creation’, this ‘Day’ gives rise to the most comment. For three reasons.
- How could the Sun be formed after the Earth?
- How could there be three previous days before a Sun & Moon
- Many millions of stars are far older than the Earth
Therefore, we need to spend some time on this. Stars (or a Sun) are formed when fusion takes place by way of various gases and atoms undergoing tremendous pressure. Clouds of gas, or nebulae are common in the Universe. A gas cloud would have given birth to our Sun. God would have been quite capable of protecting the Earth from a sudden explosive materialisation of a Sun in the centre of our solar system. The Magnetic Field, vital for the protection of all life on our planet, is a remnant of this, as is the tilt of the Earth as the shock waves battered and unhinged an un-tilted Earth. It was Good. It created the ability for the Earth to have seasons. Moses would not have known this but crucially, he recorded the events in order as given to him by God.
As we know, there was ‘light’ already shining on the Earth, which could have come from the nebula, but the light before the Sun may have come from a planet. If the Earth was spinning around before the Sun ignited, then the other planets probably were too. One of these, according to scientific research (not me) was already illuminated, thus providing Earth’s early twilight features. If I were to guess, I would say the gas giant Jupiter would have been alight. However, science has the theory that it was Saturn, not Jupiter, that was an early mini sun for our solar system. Even today Saturn, so light if you could find a bath big enough to put it in – it would float, is ridiculously hot. Too hot in fact for science to explain properly, if at all. A study of the theory of an electric universe or of plasma physics is a requirement here, but in a nutshell, the hypothesis embodies Saturn as a small Brown Dwarf Sun, with the Earth nearby. The planets were in a different order to what they are today.
When God unleashed the fireball of the Sun, the effect on the solar system would have been gigantic, it is 1,700 times bigger than Saturn to start with. Such a huge new sudden presence would have, probably by solar winds alone, put out Saturn. Even today though, Saturn still gives off more energy than it receives from the Sun. So, the emergence of the Sun would have extinguished Saturn, probably crunching nearby satellites into rings, and the new Sun would have re-juggled the order of the planets as they all began to orbit a new solar centre.
Days are named from a light-time and night-time sequence. The first three Days of Creation could have had this very sequence, as the Earth turned on its axis from the twilight aura of Saturn into facing a dark area of space. It is important to note that in Genesis it is highlighting the concept “To separate the day from the night”.
The formation of the Moon is less problematic, there is a variety of ways it could have come about, the main thing is that science would have no problem with the Moon being formed after the Earth. As I have tried to show in the picture, the Moon would have loomed large in the sky in those formative times, breathtakingly big in fact. God's idea of a lesser light to govern the night was still in effect, a very bright light, compared to its luminosity today. The Moon was not designed to slowly move away from the Earth, as it has done and is doing. We don't always appreciate by the way how strong gravity is. We know the Moon's gravity effects the tides of our oceans, but did you know its gravitational strength also causes the ground to rise underneath us by a foot (30cms) as it passes by; it is incredible we don't feel it. The Earth of course causes an even greater reaction to the Moon. The Moon's surface raises far more than 30cms, in fact the whole Moon becomes distorted and looks more of an egg shape (although we don't notice this from Earth). The Earth's gravity captures the pointy end of this egg shape to slow the Moon's rotation, which is called tidal locking, thus we only see the one side, its rotation taking as long as it does to circle the Earth. Amazing isn't it.
Finally, regarding our dating the stars as being much older than the Earth. Personally, I find this to be neither here nor there. Genesis seems to mention the stars as just a footnote within the overall commentary. Only five words (at least in English): “He also made the stars”. It is almost like an afterthought. I guess God thought: Mmm, people will ask about the stars, even though they will never go to them, perhaps I can set them out in a way to help them with navigation. Anyway, what should I say, I should say something. Mmm. I know, I will just say I made them. Yes, that will do.’
Just as my own footnote, I find it interesting that God says about setting things in ‘The expanse of the sky’, rather than just ‘The sky’. Space is indeed a great expanse.
THE FIFTH DAY
And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the Earth across the expanse of the sky. So, God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let birds increase on the Earth. And there was evening and there was morning – the fifth day.
Although there are no scientific problems with the Fifth Day, some underlying disturbances do go on. We have light, energy, water, plants, great seas, brilliant skies and of course rich land. Everything ready for the introduction of life. It is all in the correct order. Moses called it right.
Yet issues surface in the fact God describes creatures being made from a ‘kind’, a term disliked by evolutionists. And here on the Fifth Day, God is exercising His Creative Powers to fill the seas and the air with an abundance of life. Evolution says life began in the oceans before gradually crawling, somehow, onto land. After colonising the land some lighter animals managed to take to the air. This is the polar opposite of what the Bible says. You could perhaps have the opinion that the Bible endorses evolution by saying that land animals came after sea creatures, but what then of air life forms. And anyway, Genesis says that life on land came within one day of sea and air creatures.
There is also the odd fact the Bible does not mention dinosaurs, and we know dinosaurs existed because we have found their bones. Why does not Genesis say, “Let there be dinosaurs roaming the Earth” but God saw that it was not good because they were a bit too bitey. So, God hurled down a meteorite and got rid of them quickly.
Well hold on a minute. Many suggest that birds today are dinosaurs and that crocodiles and alligators are dinosaurs. The great 'Creatures of the sea with which the water teems' as classified here in Day Five, are not whales or sharks. The Hebrew language does not translate to such terms, nor to sea monsters or anything like that.
The Hebrew: וַיִּבְרָא אֱלֹהִים, אֶת-הַתַּנִּינִם הַגְּדֹלִים translates, I believe, to mean 'Ha-Taninim Ha-Gedolim' or in English: Big Crocodile (Really big). So there we have it, the first creatures made by God were dinosaurs, sea monsters if you like, but crocodile-like, and with the intent by God to "Fill the waters", these crocodile creatures would have been massively huge compared to what we see these days. Then of course, many variants of other sea (and air) creatures would have been Created as well, far too many to list out (so Genesis does not do this).
When God made creatures (not Humans by the way) from a ‘Kind’, it is not a lot different really from the way an evolutionist would explain the start of evolution. Evolution has original kinds too.
For example, God made a cat like creature and then, from this ‘Kind’ all other felines have developed. Likewise, evolution will have an original creature from where all other cats have evolved.
The significant difference is that in the evolution model, the original ‘kind’ was not anything like a cat. What’s more, different un-cat creatures would have evolved from the starting species.
The other stark difference is that in evolution, creatures become more advanced and evolve better attributes over huge time periods. In Creation, a creature was made perfect and over time has become less efficient, less perfect, less mega-monster-crocodile (for example). Crocodiles today live mainly in freshwater. The big aggressive saltwater crocodiles live mainly pretty near to shorelines too. I don't think any crocodile these days would leisurely wade across the Pacific Ocean.
THE SIXTH DAY (Land Creatures)
And God Said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind". And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
Dinosaurs are a perfect example of creatures becoming less efficient, less perfect. The emergence and the dominance of these huge beasts is impressive, yet they were not originally big at all.
How dinosaurs could even fit in with the Creation Narrative is mind-bending, let alone finding the space for the multi-millions of years involved in these epoch stretches that evolutionists demand. It is a tricky and awkward road to take, even harder to plot. It surely requires the respect of a designated segment of exclusivity, so we will skirt these issues now and discuss them later in a detailed independent approach. For now, we look solely at how dinosaurs moved in the opposite direction to the evolutionary way, at least from the Creation viewpoint.
Getting bigger did not do the dinosaurs any favours. Dinosaurs were initially small creatures, the biggest being about the size of a dog. At this kind of size, they may have been able to adapt better and perhaps even shelter and survive the big asteroid impact of - scientists estimate - 65 million years ago. The reason they were small initially is unclear but there were some extremely aggressive predators roaming the Earth before dinosaurs appeared. The Earth lost these mega creatures, both on land and in the sea in an event called the Permian Extinction, which according to our dating techniques, happened 252 million years ago. In fact, practically all life perished including trees and plant life during this astonishing period, also known as ‘The Great Dying’. The new breed of creature that was to dominate, found it had the whole Earth as its playground. No predators but not too much to eat either. Nevertheless as ‘life’ found a way, the new creatures just grew and grew into massive monsters or dragons. Today of course we don't say dragons, we use the relative modern term – Dinosaurs.
We are looking from the perspective that all creatures were 'Created', whether a dinosaur or a cat. For example, the answer to the question "What came first, the chicken or the egg?" The answer is the chicken. God Created a chicken fully formed as a full adult chicken. That way the chicken could live and lay eggs for more chickens. It would have been quite useless to just create an egg. The hatchling chick would have no means to feed or defend itself. All life began, in the first instance, as Created Adult Creatures. This was so for all 'Livestock' and all creatures moving along the ground.
I have split Day Six into two parts - hope that is okay God - so that I can separate the animals from humans.
