Part I: History Is Shaped
The Seed To Crush Must Survive From Eve
Reading the Bible can be done in a variety of ways, reading from cover to cover, reading selected chapters each day or analysing each of the books with friends and so on. The weakest way of reading the Bible is probably by selecting individual chapters. It is far better to read a whole individual book.
Here we will read the Bible from the view that because God decreed "Satan would be crushed by the seed of Eve", a special genealogy was invoked to survive sin and a lineage through the ages to link with the arrival of our Lord Jesus Christ.
It was Jesus who crushed all the power of Satan.
Although there is on-going devilment running throughout the peoples of the world, we must remember that Jesus paid the price at The Cross for us all to be saved.
Although it is best to read the whole of Genesis in one go and, please do this, I would ask that the first three chapters are then revisited so as to study the purposes of this analysis.
Please read the first three chapters of Genesis.
So let's go back to the Garden of Eden. One thing often missed when we read about the confrontation between Eve and the serpent (regarding eating fruit from the Forbidden Tree) is that Eve wasn't so shocked by the serpent speaking as she was by what it was saying. The Nachash, which by the way was an upright and tall creature, behaved in a snake-like hypnotic fashion using cunning, devious and mesmerizing words, all in a language Eve clearly understood. His dialogue was constructed so as to make Eve pause in her trust, dependence and fidelity to God.
So just for an instant, just for a few moments, the serpent held sway.
And history was shaped.
Eve was to have many children, however we are only concerned with the child who would receive and then pass on the most precious Anointed Seed of all time, which was positioned within humanity, for humanity. A seed that was shielding a Root DNA from the ravages of the evil of sin, a Pure Strand of Life exclusively formed by no less than a Holy Command from God Himself.
Part II: The First Humans
The Seed To Crush Must Survive From Eve
By the way, we should remember that the partner of Adam was called 'Woman' whilst they were in The Garden Of Eden. So technically the first humans were called Adam and Woman; it was only after they were expelled that Woman was renamed Eve. No children are named or known to have been born by Woman inside the Garden, however outside the Garden, newly named Eve is for sure known to have developed a large family, with three of the children to be of particular significance. These three were called Cain, Abel and Seth.
Cain, who was the first-born, would eventually kill his brother Abel and be driven from the land. He went on to have a daughter and several sons. The daughter is unnamed; the sons were Enoch, Irad, Mehujael, Methushael and Lamech.
Please note that Cain probably did not kill his brother when they were still young. For Cain to be driven from the land and find a wife, many new people would have had to have been created. Eve did have at least 33 sons and 23 daughters - wow indeed. Children born fresh from a perfectly made Adam & Eve would have had almost perfect genes, thus breeding was not an issue. Consequently, Cain would have been able to find a wife fairly easily if he killed Abel when he was over 50 years of age. In fact the maths produces the estimate that over 32,000 new people would be around!
Cain's son Lamech had two wives the first was called Adah. They had many children and two sons get a mention in Scripture. One called Jabal who became a great tentmaker and livestock controller. The other with the similar sounding name of Jubal is the first known musician, who played a form of flute and strummed a handmade harp.
Meanwhile Lamech's other wife, Zillah, also gets two children named in the Bible. A son called Tubal-Cain who, interestingly, formed and forged the first ever bronze style weapons. And a daughter is named as Naamah (who went on to play for Barcelona Women!).
The line of Cain may not have ended here but no more is recorded in Scripture; whatever the case the line would end anyway because of the coming Flood.
The Seed of Eve was destined then to move through from Seth.
Part III: Original DNA
The Seed To Crush Must Survive From Eve
Normally we would associate the Egg with a woman and the Seed with a man, so to clarify a point here we must remember that Eve – or as she was originally known – Woman, was a unique Creation direct from God.
As you would have read in Genesis 2:21-23 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; and the rib, which the Lord God had taken from the man, made He a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman because she was taken out of man.
With abundant life in the Garden of Eden and during their own progress, Adam and Woman eventually became intimate. Before they transgressed at the Forbidden Tree they were without sin. And during their very first liaison as a sinless couple a hidden gene was produced; a seed that lodged deep within Woman, probably in the form of a third strand of DNA. The make-up of the double helix is well known and works perfectly, the two strands can lock together and also be unpicked and therefore, be read and copied. A third strand would seem to be pretty useless on its own. In fact it would be better to have a quadruple helix because four strands would at least mean another pairing.
But God. He knew the future.
So a third strand of DNA would be ineffective then. Unless. Unless it were a Holy Unblemished Seed, crucially and eternally protected from sin. A locked away Code direct from God, never to be activated until paired by God Himself; as Born within humanity.
With the strength to crush anything, including sin and death and able to procure anything, including the forgiveness of any sin in any person, this Holy Seed was Creatively and incorruptibly Powerful. It was transferred through Eve from Adam into Seth as an unusable piece of genetic material, concealed from all good and evil parameters. God is neither good or evil, those impostors are just the consequences of sin. God is Pure.
Only real Purity would or could unlock a Code containing no language available to DNA sequencing, a Code hidden from existence by a quite secret language. Seth had many children of course but the one selected for this Seed to be passed onto was a chap called Enos. And Enos in turn also had many children but again, this Holy Gene was passed only on to one child, named Cainan, who in turn passed it through to Mahalaleel. The journey then led to Mahalaleel’s son Jared who was distinct in the fact that as the great, great, great grandson of Adam and Eve, he had a son who would actually walk with God.
Part IV: Walking With God
The Seed To Crush Must Survive From Eve
As the Seed-Link from Eve was transferred along the line, everyone of course still had sin within them but the Holy Ingredient from God was always diametrically protected from all history. Only a Supernatural Blessing upon a woman to be known as Mary, at a future date in history, would open the Code for the One without sin.
Having said that, one of Jared’s sons was about as close to being without blemish as ever a human could ever achieve. Enoch (the second person in the Bible to carry this name) was truly a most upright person and had a very special role in the early days of humanity.
Enoch lived a fruitful life and had many children with his wife, yet at the grand age of 65 he and his wife produced a son called Methuselah, a special and much loved character from that time. Before talking about him though, we must ponder about Enoch.
Enoch lived for an incredible 365 years and yet… nobody actually knows what really happened to him, he could even still be alive. If anyone knocks on your door looking several thousand years old, ask him if he is Enoch!
The Bible says in Genesis 5:24 “And Enoch walked with God”. This was after 365 years, so did he die? Genesis further states that suddenly “He was not; for God took him”. It does appear that Enoch maybe never experienced death. However the truth from Scripture is that every person dies.
You can take it to the bank that Enoch died, just as everybody else does. I think we should note that Enoch is said to have walked with God, it does not say that Enoch is ‘walking’ with God. Also the term ‘he was not’ is, in Hebrew, the same as ‘eventually die’. Although Hebrews 11:5 says that “Enoch should not see death” this is not the same as “Did not see death”. The Greek word used for ‘see’ is ‘eidon’, which means ‘aware’. So you could say Hebrews 11:5 is saying, “Enoch should not be aware of death”.
It is not my desire to go too deep into these things here, the main wonder to grasp is that Enoch walked with God!!
It is important by now to have read through Genesis 1-5 at least three times. Once to just read it, a second time to read it along with these notes and a third, to immerse yourself in the narrative to date, to soak up the truths within. Then perhaps read it all again for a fourth time.
Part V: Pre-Flood
The Seed To Crush Must Survive From Eve
Now before going any further we should clarify a fact or two about general conceptions, especially those foisted on us by Holywood. In the blockbuster film Noah true facts were casually replaced by fantasy.
One of the last if not the last surviving ancestor from Cain’s line was a guy called Tubal-Cain, who became known throughout the land as a person capable of making many different types of weapon. It was interesting and entertaining for the filmmakers of Noah to use this character as a warlord, one intent on creating mayhem, which he duly did throughout the film, excellently portrayed by Ray Winstone. However, the Truth of Scripture was overruled completely when they had him stowaway on the Ark, it never happened. There are quite a few other errors in the film but I don’t want to harbour on them and take away from the enjoyable special effects and great acting. Yet there is another thing we must comment upon, relating to Methuselah, brilliantly played by Sir Anthony Hopkins.
One of the favourite characters in the Old Testament is Methuselah, who lived 969 years (Genesis 5:27), longer than anyone else recorded. His father was Enoch, of whom it is said he "walked with God" (5:24) but who was taken to heaven without dying at 365 years. Methuselah's son Lamech died a few years before the Flood at 777 years (5:31) after bearing Noah. When Methuselah was born, his godly father must have prophetically known of coming things for his son's name means "when he dies, judgment," and interestingly enough, Methuselah died in the same year God judged the sinful world with the great Flood of Noah's day.
There are many details of the Flood account about which we can only speculate, but perhaps Noah was given up to 120 years of warning that the Flood was coming (6:3) and we are told he was a "preacher of righteousness" (2 Peter 2:5). Yet during the building of the Ark only "eight souls were saved" (1 Peter 3:20). Why didn't he influence more people? His faithful obedience in building a huge boat on dry land must have been both attention-getting and a source of conviction to the surrounding sinful people. We might suspect that Lamech and Methuselah espoused the same testimony, yet only the eight close family members boarded the Ark.
Since Methuselah died the same year of the Flood, some have wondered if he was an unbeliever and this is why he perished in the Flood waters. Of his spiritual condition we know little, other than that he was the son of godly Enoch, and his son Lamech prophesied with spiritual insight at the birth of Noah (Genesis 5:29).
Here are a few more hints to ponder. God had promised that "the seed of the woman," Eve (3:15) would one day destroy Satan, and ever since then Satan, in his hatred for God and His hatred of man, who was Created in God's Image, has schemed to thwart God's Holy Plan (4:7, 6:2). Furthermore, humankind itself thought of "only evil during these times - continually" (6:5) and "the earth (was) filled with violence through them" (6:13). If left unchecked it was clear then that there soon would be no survivor of Eve remaining.
Certainly the violence took the lives of many. Animals became violent and bloodthirsty. Wars between communities of humans were rampant. Sinful nature had full sway. Would we not be correct in assuming then that the violence was directed toward believers most of all? Perhaps Noah had many more converts over the years but they all got killed and the only ones left in the end were the eight mentioned in the Bible.
And this may have been what happened to Methuselah. Perhaps he was the very last martyr, cut down just as the Ark was finished. Maybe the filmakers were not far from the truth in this aspect. And when Methuselah was killed, God's patience was finally over. In order then to preserve mankind, and in particular Eve's lineage through whom the Redeemer would one day come, the moment had come for God's justice to be unleashed.
Though some may mistakenly think Methuselah died in the Flood, this is highly unlikely. Methuselah was raised by a godly parent, Enoch. It was Enoch remember who walked with God and pleased God so much that God took him away from Earth, initially, without the taste of death. In fact, Methuselah may have actually even helped Noah in the construction phase of the Ark. But his death preceded the Flood.
Part VI: The Rain Begins
The Seed To Crush Must Survive From Eve
The most dramatic, deadly and catastrophic event to have ever happened on the Earth BAR NONE was the Flood (as recorded in the Bible). It is not for comment here about the logistics of the Ark building or how all the animals got in the Ark or to answer other related questions in that vein. We can answer such stuff in another portal, here we are solely focusing on ‘The Seed’ and its journey. Yet it is worth noting initially that it had never rained before on Earth, so the rain was a new experience, for everyone.
Other similar Flood stories do not alter or shake any statements that we can read in Scripture. You will be told in books and presentations that the Biblical Flood is just one of a number of Flood myths, however these viewpoints are always error strewn. And there are two aspects here to be clear about.
1.The reason there are even any flood stories around the world from different cultures and religions (there are about 500 stories) is because of a basic truth.
The real Flood was truly global and therefore there will be worldwide tales.
2. When someone uses a myth to unsettle the foundations of proper Scriptural text, any quiet research will reveal that any flood myth will be weak in credibility and always, repeat always, stem from a date far later than biblical dates. So other flood stories are copied from the Bible, not the other way round. And this is true even for myths that seem at first sight to actually pre-date the Bible because, quite simply, they don’t.
In reading the Bible we cannot hope to grasp all the terrible aspects involved in it but we can be assured that the Seed survived and was passed on through Noah to one of his sons. Before all that however, it is important to reflect on myths surrounding such a cataclysmic event.
The main body of flood myths from the historical biblical land sites tend to come from fragments of the First Babylonian Dynasty. In fact from a myth fragment within surviving fragments of the Babylon era as a whole, and these fragments have spawned many stories, such as the Mesopotamian ones of Ziusudra (a river flood at Shuruppak), the more famous Gilgamesh flood (actually the same flood but at a different time) and Atra-Hasis (quite clearly a tale taken from the Bible). These myths would seem to pre-date the Bible by being dated at different times between 2900BC and 2700BC, any date will suffice as long as it is before 2348BC, the year the real Flood began.
The ‘Epic Of Gilgamesh’ even records a man making a boat and saving the animals, which leads to the immediate reckoning that Noah’s Flood is copied from the Gilgamesh mythical flood, so the Noah Flood is a myth too, yet the evidence of this is very flaky.
Part VII: Myths
The Seed To Crush Must Survive From Eve
Without going completely around the world (there are also Hindu, Greek, and African and Meso-American flood myths, most being utterly unbelievable and impossible to take on board as factual events) we will, with respect and, as a resistance to going too much off track, concentrate on just one myth, the one that carries the most famous challenge to the Flood account in Scripture.
The Epic of Gilgamesh, carved in clay tablets, is a remarkable discovery and one that has even prompted the atheist Richard Dawkins to write a book on. Interesting that he will delve into anything, even something that is not science, in order to try and outwit the Bible. He fails by the way.
First let us remember that mythology is always based on actual events. If you read through all the information about Gilgamesh you can only conclude that it is all myth. Some of the stuff appears to be quite ridiculous. Sometimes Gilgamesh is referred to as Bilgamesh or Lzdubar. And sometimes you find that scholars end up arguing not about if a Flood took place but about which one came first!
One point that is raised is that the cuneiform system of writing, which is done upon clay tablets by a blunt reed to create a kind of wedged shaped pictorial mark, is so old and almost certainly the first ever inscribed system that could be classed as actual writing, is also therefore older than any writing found from biblical sources. And this is true.
However, the fact that the Gilgamesh Epic is older than verses from Genesis does not mean that Genesis is copied from Babylonian myths. And we must keep in mind that the stories we have found from Babylon have a very high fairy-tale content, comprising many different gods with human attitudes and tales that spin with a quite absurd direction. The inscriptions are also primed as poems, not historical facts. It is interesting too that the Gilgamesh flood story, which is at pains to copy the Noah Flood point by point, ends up with an Ark that would sink like a stone.
But anyway, which story is the older one?
Most scholars actually date the Mesopotamia clay tablets at around the 15th-18th Century BC. The oldest dating is perhaps 2000BC; older dates are tinged with speculation. The Books of Genesis and Job were written, in the form we can identify today, at around 1400BC but we must consider that an early form of proto-Hebrew script is dated older, as evident from discoveries from the Sinai Peninsula. Other Old Testament books were written much later than the era we are examining here.
If we take the Babylonian fragments to date between 2000BC or even 2900BC against biblical records dating at best to 1400BC then there is no contest. The Noah Flood is just a copy of the Gilgamesh Epic. This assumption though would be in error to a high degree, as we would be completely bypassing one of the strongest Jewish strengths, that of oral traditions and the passing down of information. No culture is better at doing this and the detailed oral methods used by the Jews has served to relay much information of the early days of humanity. We know for sure that this almost supernatural ability has been used by the Jewish peoples for at least maybe 3,500 years because of evidence we already have. There is no logical reason then, to assume that this oral tradition does not work further back in time. The odds are in fact very good that the oral traditions, which gave rise to Genesis, go back far beyond even the most extreme dates imagined for Gilgamesh. Clearly any dispute against such a premise as this would be quite a feeble argument.
We can ascertain that Scripture was either documented somehow or given through oral teachings at least to the same time periods as the dating of the Gilgamesh tablets. This is because of some of the names used in biblical reference. Without going through them all, we can cite the names of Abraham’s father and brother as highlighting the distant years in question. Terah and Nahor were common names from the times around 2100BC but faded out of use afterwards. In Genesis 12 we read that Abraham (Abram at the time) left the city of Haran with his wife and nephew. Haran was lost from existence by 1800BC. There are five cities from biblical records that have all been found by archaeologists all that date to beyond 2100BC.
Further independent research will help conclude that (a) Scripture reaches way back into the distant past, way beyond Gilgamesh and that (b) Mesopotamian flood stories are awfully sallow versions of what we find from the sane details of biblical text. And further, the poems of the Epic are even more muddied by the involvement of various mythical Sumerian idols and gods. It is only the Bible that claims all of Scripture comes from God and that there is no human revelation. Only the Bible makes coherent sense. Only the Bible is consistent, without blemish, is perfect and inerrant and portrays His-Story, the story of history from God’s Perspective.
It is only in Genesis where we can truly seek to continue the journey of ‘The Seed’. It is only in Genesis where we find the truth to cover an epoch: -
Two things are needed for life, water and sunlight. When they meet you get a rainbow.
Part VIII: The Flood
After decades of painstaking work by Noah and his family to build a floating sanctury and, after trying to seek out other people to join them, those on Earth who could still be deemed good humans but failing in the task, our planet was left with just a handful of souls. These people, so very few in number, along with scores of animals from different categories came to be the only living things selected for survival.
Although various interpretations of the Flood have been developed over the years, none really address what the atmosphere was like, the smell, the dankness, the mood or temperature. Also we tend to hear that it is all about Noah, this is wrong, to a degree.
The perfect ambience of the Earth’s environment was hit hard when the Garden of Eden was closed, which cut off the flow of the natural order for atmospheric conditions. From this the air would have become more and more humid as the years rolled away, perhaps hardly noticeable at first but by the time Noah was born the difference was tangible. We must recall that no rain had fallen on the Earth ever, from Adam days up to this time of Noah. The Firmament was still around the planet, like a ring of Saturn. All water and moisture bubbled up from underground springs. It would have probably been on a hot evening night when God revealed to Noah that He wanted him to build a boat, a really big boat.
Whilst undertaking this awesome task, behind the scenes evil began to multiply at a greater rate as an army of horrific fallen angels coerced, copulated, antagonised, manipulated and mesmerised human-beings. Stronger, more agile and with better intellect, these angels were able to systematically eradicate the original natures of humanity, characteristics that were originally intended and Willed by God. And so, after many years of infection, all vestiges of humankind were generally exterminated through subtle yet brutal interbreeding. The results were horrendous in the Eyes of God. Some pockets remained as Noah and his family ploughed on with a single-minded determination to build the large boat. The stifling heat and suffocating humidity of the days were endured steadfastly over many years as an Ark took shape. By the time completion was at hand, all pockets of humanity had been either violated or intimidated into living cruel and moronic lives, thus leaving just the Noah Clan for the fallen angels to deal with. However, within the Noah Clan was the Seed of Eve and God’s True Angels stood between the evil ones and Noah's remnant of humanity. With flashing dual edged Holy Swords, the True Angels saw to it that no evil angel would pass, not even their leader, Satan. And so it was that the evil mass watching the Ark be built could only throw insults.
As the awful verbal abuses were thrown as weapons, hurled by non-humans, sub-humans or evil humans, Noah and his team prevailed, the Ark was build and the animals came to join them. It is not here that we go into the details of the animals or indeed the Flood itself. We can do that somewhere else or independent reading can be selected. Our theme is to read the Bible through the travels of the Seed of Eve. In that respect, Noah gives way to Shem, as this son carries forward the important line. Once again it is interesting how Hollywood sometimes stumbles across a truth without probably realising it. In the film Noah, Tubal-Cain has stowed away aboard the Ark (there is no evidence for this in the Bible) and in one scene he tangles with Shem. Bearing in mind that Satan’s goal is to stop the Seed of Eve in its tracks, Tubal-Cain (when he feels he has the upper hand) punches Shem, knocking him to the ground and menacingly proclaims he will “Build a new world in my image”. He fails and is actually killed off by Shem’s brother Ham, yet Hollywood was right in that if Noah and his brothers had been slain, leaving Tubal-Cain with just the women, then indeed everything today would be very different. However, the True Angels of God protected Shem and the family around him.
To be continued...
